WHAT IS ​SHUTTER DRAG?
Shutter drag is something I use in darker rooms at events, and party times at weddings. You’ll know I’m doing it when you see me wiggle my camera around — YES I do look stupid! And I get some strange looks from guests who ask WTF am I doing?! 🤣
why do i use ​SHUTTER DRAG?
I use shutter drag in my wedding and event photography because it captures the party atmosphere so much better. Using standard flash just lightens the whole space and kills the vibrance of disco lights and lasers.
Ultimately the bass-pumping party that I know you’re planning looks kick ass with a bit of shutter drag!Â

how to ​SHUTTER DRAG?
I’ll be honest, there’s more fails than wins, but with a bit of observation and planning, you’re likely gonna get lucky! You have to have some (but not loads) of cool lighting in the space, and ideally some awesome shapes being thrown on the dance floor. Then wait for a beautiful moment to flash the subject 👀, no not flashing like that…
Use a slower-than-usual shutter speed (1/5s ish), press the trigger and then wiggle or drag the camera away from the lights before the shutter closes. Whilst this doesn’t mean ‘you’re a wizard (Harry)’, the resulting photos can make you look pretty fricking magical! ✨
